Today, according to all the indications, the Assisted Dying Bill currently before Parliament will be defeated.
Despite consistent polling showing that the majority of people in the country support the Bill, MPs - against the wishes of the people who elected them - will kill the bill.
Let's just examine that for a minute. I've waxed lyrical about this matter before (https://gibboblog.uk/whose-life-is-it-anyway) so I have made my position very clear. But what infuriates me is that MPs sitting in Westminster are allowed to vote to vote down the Bill without consulting the public. Surely this is a matter of such significance that it should be a vote held across the country. We were allowed to vote against staying in Europe but we aren't to be trusted on a matter of whether a terminally ill patient should be allowed to die in dignity? Really?
It is inhumane, lacking in any vestige of human compassion and arrogant in the extreme. When the next election comes round, I certainly won't forget the betrayal of my MP. I hope I will not be alone in that regard.
