The pinnacle of human evolution?

A bit off-topic for me but...I don't know whether it's the result of so many people being bored because we're in lockdown over the coronavirus epidemic, but I have noticed a huge upswing in what I call "human stupidity" posts. You know - the kind of stuff that sees conspiracies in everything from the nature of the coronavirus outbreak being a deliberate world domination tactic by China to those who believe the FA Cup Final is actually some demonic capitalist plot to subjugate the working man and woman.

There's garbage from every end of the spectrum - left wing garbage, right wing garbage, religious garbage, racist garbage, sexist and homophobic garbage. You name it, and there'll be garbage amply demonstrating the worst human traits you can imagine. These stories are simply vessels for jealousy, ignorance, racism, bigotry, and politically-motivated hatred. These stories are the home of self-righteous bullshit.

Then there's the personal attacks - I've read so much ill-informed ignorant garbage about people like Richard Branson - it staggers me that people are simply incapable of doing 2 minutes research to find out facts. There are people calling for him to be denied a bailout for Virgin Atlantic because he lives in a island retreat in the Caribbean. Two minutes research shows you why this is not possible under British law.

Has Branson ever broken the law? Has he ever not paid tax that was due? Has he created thousands of jobs? People hate him because he is rich and successful. That's just jealousy-driven political stupidity. But - the haters refuse to acknowledge one fact - If Virgin Atlantic is denied a bailout, then 8000 people are out of work. But hey - let's not worry about that, as long as we get to hammer Branson.

Just today, there's a story about Bill Gates creating a special group for billionaires so they can rule the world. It implies they have paid the Chinese to develop coronavirus so they can depopulate the world. This is just paranoid fantasy. It takes less than 90 seconds to do enough research to demonstrate it is absolute garbage.
One of the worst offenders on Facebook is group called "Open Eyes". The irony is that they are the exact opposite of that. Their eyes are clamped firmly shut because standing right in front of them is the vision of common sense that their prejudice and bigotry desperately needs to avoid.

People insist that stupidity is an absence of intelligence. That's rubbish. Stupidity is the refusal to apply simple common sense. Stupidity is the willingness to pander to your own prejudice and bigotry so that you indulge stories that even a simpleton with little more than a single misfiring brain cell would recognise as ridiculous and clearly untrue.

We know there are brainless morons out there creating false stories or fake news. What staggers me is that there are people who are so lazy that they just accept the stories, re-post them and give them credence without doing even the most minimal of research.
Presumably doing so would prove the story to be utter bollocks and they would then have to acknowledge that and behave as normal, intelligent human beings. But they prefer to pander to their prejudice, so they ignore common sense and remain as self-righteous ignorant fools.

And this is the pinnacle of human evolution? God help us all.
